The Event That Brought Virginia Beach’s Curl Community Together
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, every corner of Versus Salon was filled with curls, conversation, and community.
From 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., our Virginia Beach salon became a gathering place for curlfriends from different backgrounds and with every kind of wave, curl, coil, and pattern. Some guests arrived with specific questions for our curl experts. Others came ready to learn, meet new people or simply spend an evening in a room where natural texture was understood and celebrated. By the time the event began, Curls Night Out was officially sold out.
The energy was undeniable—but the most meaningful part of the evening was not any single demonstration, giveaway, or photo. It was watching people recognize that their curl questions, challenges, and victories were shared by an entire community.
That is exactly why Curls Night Out exists.
The long-awaited return of a Versus Salon tradition

New curlfriends sit together and enjoy Curls Night Out, a sold-out Virginia Beach event created to bring the Hampton Roads curly hair community together.
Our 2018 Curls Night Out recap captured many of the elements that made the event special: curl education, stylist Q&A, live transformations, raffles, and an unforgettable room full of texture. Nearly eight years later, it was an honor to bring that experience back to Versus Salon for a new generation of curlfriends.
The 2026 return felt both nostalgic and completely new. The heart of the event remained the same, but the conversations reflected where today’s curly community is now: surrounded by more products, routines, techniques, and online advice than ever before—and still searching for reliable, personalized guidance.
As a curl-focused salon serving Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads, we believe curl confidence grows when education and community come together. Curls Night Out gave us the opportunity to offer both.
A night of curls, connection, and new beginnings
One of the most beautiful sights of the evening was the range of textures and personal curl journeys represented throughout the room. No two guests had the same story, routine, or relationship with their hair—and no one needed to fit a single definition of what a “perfect” curl should look like.

Throughout the salon, guests met new curlfriends, exchanged stories, and connected over experiences that can feel deeply personal: discovering their natural pattern after years of straightening, searching for the right products, rebuilding their hair’s health, finding a trusted curl specialist or simply becoming more confident wearing their natural texture.
That mix of experiences made Curls Night Out feel less like a traditional beauty event and more like a community reunion—even for guests joining us for the first time. The sold-out gathering reflected exactly what we hoped to create: an inclusive curly hair community event in Virginia Beach where people with waves, curls,, and coils could feel understood, supported and celebrated.
That spirit of community extended into every thoughtful detail of the evening. Between educational sessions, attendees took photos, browsed VCurls products and enjoyed delicious curly-themed mocktails prepared and served by Brooke and Jess, the owners and hearts behind Wildflower Collective.
Brooke and Jess of Wildflower Collective brought a refreshing touch to Curls Night Out with handcrafted, curly-themed mocktails created especially for the evening.
Brooke and Jess created a specialty Curls Night Out-inspired mocktail menu exclusively for the event, adding another personalized element to the experience. From the presentation of each drink to the warm service they provided throughout the evening, they created a welcoming space where guests could pause, refresh, and continue connecting.
We were especially honored that Curls Night Out marked Wildflower Collective’s first-ever event. Supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs throughout Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads are important parts of strengthening the community around us.
We are incredibly proud of Brooke and Jess for taking this exciting step and grateful that Versus Salon could be part of the beginning of their journey. We congratulate them on this new endeavor and wish them continued success as they move forward into their next adventures. We cannot wait to see where Wildflower Collective goes next.
Curl education that went beyond the salon chair
At Versus Salon, we often say: We don’t just do curls—we understand them.
Curls Night Out allowed our stylists to take the education that normally happens one-on-one during an appointment and share it with an entire room. Through product education, live curl transformations and natural styling demonstrations, attendees could observe our curl specialists at work, hear the reasoning behind different techniques and ask questions throughout each service.

The evening’s educational program began with VCurls product education led by Senior Curl Specialist Alé. She introduced attendees to the complete VCurls product lineup, discussed key ingredients and explained how products can be paired according to someone’s hair texture, porosity, condition and desired results. Rather than simply explaining what each product does, Alé helped guests understand how to choose and combine curly hair products based on their individual needs and styling goals.
The education then moved from product knowledge to live application. Alé was joined by Junior Curl Specialists Madison and Le’Stancia to perform curl transformations on models with different hair types, patterns and textures.
Alé worked with a model who had thick 2B/3A waves and curls, while Le’Stancia performed a curl transformation on a model with tightly coiled 4A/4B hair. Madison worked with a 2B model after first completing a beautiful creative color service. Presenting these different textures side by side gave attendees an opportunity to see why curl care cannot follow one universal routine. Guests could observe how each stylist evaluated her model’s hair, selected products and adapted the transformation to the texture and desired result in front of her.

Madison’s demonstration also highlighted the relationship between creative color and curly hair care. Successfully coloring and transforming curls requires an understanding of formulation, texture, condition and the way the finished color will interact with the natural curl pattern. That commitment to technical knowledge extends across our entire team: every current Versus Salon stylist is now a Certified Matrix Color Expert, further strengthening our approach to customized color services for different hair types and curl patterns.
Following the curl transformations, Stylist Bria demonstrated heatless curling methods for natural hair using flexi rods and perm rods. She explained why rod sets can be a useful alternative to direct-heat styling and showed attendees different ways these tools can be used to create shape, definition and movement.
Stylist Niecy then showcased a natural twist-out on another model with coily hair, demonstrating the versatility and definition that can be achieved while working with the hair’s natural texture. Once the transformations and styles were complete, attendees watched each model’s final results come to life as the hair was diffused and dried.
Together, the demonstrations connected product knowledge, curl transformations, creative color, heatless rod sets, twist-outs and drying techniques into one comprehensive curly hair education experience. The variety of models also allowed guests to see our team work across a broad range of textures—from thick 2B/3A curls to 4A/4B coils—while asking questions relevant to their own hair.

That access mattered. Curl care is not one-size-fits-all, and a technique that works beautifully for one person may need to be adjusted for another person’s pattern, density, porosity, condition or lifestyle. Instead of offering quick universal rules, our stylists helped guests understand how to make more informed choices for their own hair.
For anyone beginning—or rebuilding—their natural hair journey, that kind of guidance can replace frustration with clarity. As we have shared before, continuing education, product knowledge and hands-on practice are all part of what it takes to become a curl specialist.
Curls Night Out gave us the opportunity to show our expertise rather than simply talk about it. To style curls with intention, you must first understand them—and that understanding comes from education, experience and a willingness to keep learning.

The Curl Conversation: honest stories, shared lessons
A highlight of the evening was The Curl Conversation, a guided discussion featuring Quisha (@sagrn83) and Ashley (@justanother.curlygirl), moderated by Ariyana Posey.
The panel created space for the kind of honest curl talk that is often missing from a perfectly edited tutorial or final-results photo. Ashley and Quisha brought different experiences and perspectives to the conversation, reminding us that everyone’s curl journey looks different—and that difference is valuable.
Together, we talked about learning your hair in a world full of advice, finding confidence through trial and error, building routines that make sense in real life, and knowing when professional guidance can help. Guests were invited into the conversation through audience Q&A, turning the panel into a true exchange rather than a lecture.
The biggest takeaway was simple: healthy curls are learned, not copied. Progress begins when you stop comparing your hair to someone else’s finished result and start paying attention to what your own texture is telling you.

Of course, Curls Night Out would not be complete without a little extra excitement.
Raffles and giveaways kept the room buzzing throughout the evening, but they also reflected a tradition that goes back to earlier Curls Night Out events: giving guests tools, products, and opportunities that help them continue their curl journey after the night is over.
There were cheers when winners were announced, glasses raised over colorful mocktails, and plenty of cameras capturing the curls in the room. Yet the greatest takeaway was something every attendee could carry home—the feeling of being seen, supported, and connected.
