ABOUT CURLY HAIR & CURL CARE
-
Curl types range from 2A (loose waves) to 4C (tight coils).
Look at your hair when it’s soaking wet and clean—no products, no styling. Does it form an ‘S’ pattern (wavy), a spiral loop (curly), or a tight coil (coily)? That’s roughly your pattern. Many people have multiple curl types on their head.
Many clients are surprised to learn that they thought they had wavy hair, but it was really curly hair in need of the right care!
A consultation at Versus Salon in Virginia Beach will help you identify your specific pattern and what that means for styling and care.
-
More normal than you’d think. Many of our clients spent years straightening, blow-drying, or brushing out their natural texture without realizing they had wavy or curly hair underneath. If your hair has ever been wavy when wet but frizzy when dry, or if it poofs out instead of lying flat, there’s a good chance your natural pattern has been hiding. We see this every week at Versus Salon—and the moment a client discovers their curls for the first time is one of the best parts of what we do.
-
Porosity is how easily your hair absorbs and holds moisture. Low-porosity hair has tightly sealed cuticles and can be resistant to moisture. High-porosity hair absorbs moisture quickly but may struggle to retain it. Understanding your porosity helps us recommend the right products and treatments. During your consultation at Versus Salon, we’ll assess your porosity and create a care plan tailored to your hair’s needs.
-
The Curly Girl Method is a hair care approach that avoids sulfates, silicones, and heat styling. It focuses on hydration, plopping, and air-drying to enhance your natural curl pattern. Some of our clients follow these principles, and we can help you integrate them with professional curl care if you’re interested. It’s not a requirement for visiting us—simply one of many approaches to caring for textured hair. All of our curl products, including our line VCurls, have incorporated this approach as well.
-
Yes. Versus Salon serves curl types 2A through 4C, including wavy, curly, and coily hair on clients of all ethnicities. We’re trained in multiple methods that work for every texture, including DevaCut, Ouidad, Cado, and Rezo techniques. All these techniques are focused on your curl shape, which we focus on when cutting your curls. Our Virginia Beach location serves clients throughout Hampton Roads, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and beyond.
ABOUT OUR SERVICES
-
The best haircut for wavy, frizzy hair is one that’s cut with your natural texture in mind—not against it. At Versus Salon, we cut curly and wavy hair dry, in its natural state, so the shape holds when you wear it. Traditional wet cuts ignore how wavy and curly hair actually behaves, which is why so many people leave a salon loving their blowout but hating their hair the next day. If frizz is your main concern, we also pair cuts with anti-frizz treatments to seal moisture and smooth the cuticle.
-
A low-maintenance curly haircut is designed so your curls fall into shape naturally with minimal daily styling. We cut for your curl’s natural movement, density, and weight distribution so the shape holds between wash days. The goal is a cut you can wash, apply product, and go—not one that requires an hour of diffusing to look right. If you’ve been battling your hair every morning, a specialist cut at Versus Salon can change that.
-
A Curly Cut is a precision cutting method designed specifically for curly, coily, and wavy hair (2A–4C). Instead of cutting hair wet and straight, the stylist cuts each curl in its natural state. This preserves your curl pattern and creates a cut that gets better every time you wash it. We focus on the curl shape that our client desires. We implement our Versus Curls technique after years of training to give solid curl results on every texture or type.
-
Yes. Our anti-frizz treatments for curly hair are designed to restore moisture, seal the cuticle, and reduce frizz at the source—not just mask it with heavy products. Whether your frizz comes from humidity, porosity issues, or product buildup, we’ll assess the cause and recommend a treatment plan. These treatments work beautifully as a standalone service or paired with a curl cut for maximum definition.
-
Most services take 90–120 minutes. This includes consultation, prep, cutting, and styling. We never rush a curl cut because curl-by-curl precision takes time. Book with confidence that you’ll have the time you need.
-
Yes. Color for curly hair requires different expertise than straight-hair color work. Our color specialists understand how texture and porosity affect color uptake and longevity. We offer consultations to discuss your color goals and how they fit with your curl care routine.
LOCATION & BOOKING
-
Yes—and it’s one of the things we’re most proud of. Our home is in Virginia Beach, and we see clients every week from across the 757: Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. But curly hair specialists are hard to find, so our clients come from much further. We regularly welcome guests from Richmond, Fredericksburg, and other parts of Virginia, as well as northern North Carolina—the Outer Banks, Elizabeth City, Currituck, and Moyock. When someone drives two or three hours for a curl cut, that’s the kind of trust we don’t take lightly.
-
You can book online through our website or call us directly. We recommend booking in advance, especially for curl cut services. First-time clients are welcome; we’ll take extra time for consultation.
-
For our curly girls, we ask that you come with your hair down, detangled, dry, and ponytail-free.
We ask that all of our clients come with their hair detangled to provide the service time needed to complete your service.
-
We ask for 48 hours’ notice for cancellations. This allows us to offer the time slot to another client.
Cancellations with less notice may incur a fee.
-
Yes, we require a deposit for all appointments. This is held against your final bill and ensures we can plan our day effectively.
-
Bring photos of cuts you love, your current hair routine (products you use), and any concerns about your hair. This information helps our stylists create a cut and care plan tailored to you. If you’re new to curly hair care, come ready to learn during your consultation visit.
-
No outside food is permitted in the salon. We offer light refreshments as a courtesy.
Children and guests are not permitted to accompany clients to their scheduled appointments. Our salon has a limited amount of space for clients awaiting scheduled appointments and our stylist stations are not suited to accommodate guests. To avoid unnecessary danger and a distraction to our team members, guests and children are not permitted to attend salon appointments unless they are also scheduled to receive services. If a client is unable to make arrangements for their guests or their children, we kindly request that you reschedule your appointment.
-
Please list all desired services when booking your appointment to ensure enough time is scheduled. Additional services requested during your visit may be declined to keep your stylist on time. If you're unsure which services you need, we recommend booking a consultation first to ensure accurate scheduling.
-
All of our stylists offer 15-minute consultations for clients who wish to ask questions about their hair care or styling options. Consultations cost $20 and paid for at the time of booking. Consultation fees go straight to your next appointment and will be deducted from the final total of your service.
Consultations are required before booking all braiding, loc, weave, extensions, and coloring services.
-
If a client is unsatisfied with their service, they may contact the salon and consult with their stylist about resolving the concern. Appeasement services will only be honored for technical missteps if a client contacts the salon within one week of their original service.
If a client is not able to keep their appointment and does not give us notice within 48 hours of their scheduled appointment or does not show, the deposit will be surrendered.
No refunds or exchanges are permitted on the sale of retail products.

Deposits are required on all appointments. Deposits will be due no later than two weeks before the scheduled appointment or the appointment may not be reserved. Appointments scheduled online will require immediate deposits to confirm booking. One reschedule is permitted without penalty if requested within 48 hours of the scheduled service. Pre-purchased Packages and Groupon Vouchers will be held as deposits for applicable clients.
If a client books an appointment online and needs to make a change, it is best to contact the salon so your deposit is not affected. If a client cancels their appointment online, it is the responsibility of the client to notify the salon so that a refund for their deposit can be processed.
-
Please arrive with dry, lightly detangled hair. No heavy products.
An additional detangling fee will be applied if more than 10 minutes are spent detangling.
-
We make every effort to prepare your stylist’s schedule so that clients can be serviced on time and receive the full attention of their stylist, so in the unfortunate event you are not able to arrive within 15 minutes of your scheduled appointment time, you may be asked to reschedule. Alternatively, if a stylist is behind on their daily schedule, we will make every effort to notify clients of schedule changes that might be necessary as soon as possible. This should only occur in unforeseen circumstances as we do not double-book our stylists.
