TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SILK PRESS LAST
A fresh silk press can give natural or relaxed hair movement, shine, and a smooth finish without the permanent commitment of a chemical relaxer. At Versus Salon, we call this service Thermal Silk Press.
A professional Thermal Silk Press paired with thoughtful at-home maintenance can help preserve the movement, shine, and smooth finish of your silk press.
Because a silk press is a temporary straight style, moisture will eventually cause the hair to begin returning to its natural pattern. Rain, humidity, shower steam, sweat and shampooing can all shorten its wear. That does not mean you have to stop living your life to protect your hair—it simply means planning for the conditions that affect the style and knowing when it is time to let your texture return.
With the right appointment preparation and at-home routine, many Versus clients can expect approximately one to three weeks from their Thermal Silkening. Your actual result will depend on your texture, the weather, activity level, and maintenance.
1.Check the weather and protect your hair on the way home
If rain is in the forecast, ask your stylist to wrap your finished hair before you leave the salon. A protective covering can help prevent your new style from getting wet between the salon and your destination.
Remove any plastic covering after you are safely indoors and dry. It is meant for short-term protection from the weather—not for extended wear that could trap heat or moisture around the hair and scalp.
2. Wrap your silk press every night
Nightly wrapping helps preserve the shape of your style while reducing tangling and friction as you sleep. Your stylist can show you the direction and technique that works best for your haircut and desired finish.
If you received curls or a soft bend rather than a fully straight finish, ask whether pin curls, rollers or another nighttime method would preserve the shape better than a traditional wrap.
3. Use silk or satin protection while you sleep
Secure your wrap with a silk or satin scarf or bonnet. A silk or satin pillowcase provides another layer of protection if your scarf comes off during the night.
Nighttime protection will not make a silk press moisture-proof, but it can help reduce friction, tangling and unnecessary manipulation while you sleep.
4. Protect the style from rain, humidity and shower steam
Water and moisture cause a temporary straight style to revert. Use a secure shower cap and avoid allowing hot shower steam to collect around uncovered hair. When you are outside, an umbrella, hood or weather-appropriate hair covering can help during light rain.
Hampton Roads weather can change quickly, so check the forecast before planning a silk press around an outdoor event. Even with excellent maintenance, high humidity may shorten the life of the style.
5. Keep added products light
Repeatedly layering oils, creams and sprays can weigh down your hair and reduce its movement. Use only the products and amount your stylist recommends for your texture and finish.
If your hair begins feeling dry, oily or difficult to manage, adding more product may not be the answer. Contact your stylist for guidance instead of combining multiple heavy products that were not selected for the service.
6. Avoid repeatedly touching up the style with heat
It can be tempting to reach for a flat iron as soon as the roots or ends begin to change, but repeated touch-ups add cumulative heat exposure. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using heat protection and the lowest effective temperature when thermally straightening hair.
Ask your stylist how to refresh minor bends without repeatedly applying direct heat. Once a large portion of the style has begun reverting, it may be time to cleanse and return to your natural texture rather than continuing to press it.
7. Plan for workouts and swimming—without putting your life on hold
Sweat is moisture, so an intense workout may cause the roots of a silk press to begin reverting. That does not mean you need to skip exercise. Understand the tradeoff, protect the hair using the method your stylist recommends and allow your scalp to cool and dry before taking the hair down or restyling it.
Swimming will usually have a greater effect because the hair is exposed directly to water. A swim cap can help, but it may not keep the hair completely dry. If your hair is exposed to pool water, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends rinsing promptly, cleansing appropriately and following with conditioner. Hair health is more important than stretching a straight style for a few additional days.
8. Know when your silk press has reached the end of its wear
A silk press is designed to be temporary. Reversion is not a failed service—it is your natural texture responding to moisture.
When the style has run its course, cleanse and condition your hair instead of repeatedly adding heat or product. If your curl pattern does not return as expected, or you notice unusual breakage, shedding or scalp concerns, talk with your stylist. Persistent hair-loss concerns should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist.
Silk press or keratin smoothing treatment?
If your main goal is a temporary straight style, Thermal Silkening may be the right fit. If you wear your hair smooth most of the time and want longer-lasting frizz control, you may be considering a keratin smoothing treatment instead.
These services differ in their process, longevity, aftercare and possible effect on your curls. Read our complete guide to silk presses vs. keratin smoothing treatments, then explore whether a keratin smoothing treatment may be right for you.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a silk press last?
Many Versus clients can expect approximately one to three weeks. Texture, weather, sweat, moisture exposure and at-home maintenance can all shorten or extend the result.
Can I exercise with a silk press?
Yes. Sweat may cause the roots to revert, so discuss a workout-friendly wrapping or securing method with your stylist and allow the scalp to cool and dry before restyling. Your exercise routine should not be sacrificed to preserve the style.
Should I flat-iron my silk press again at home?
Repeated touch-ups increase cumulative heat exposure. Ask your stylist how to refresh the look and use additional direct heat sparingly, if at all.
Will my curls return after a silk press?
A silk press is intended to be temporary, and the natural pattern should return after cleansing if no heat damage has occurred. Excessive heat can cause lasting changes, which is why professional technique, temperature, and service frequency matter.
