For 17 years, Team Versus has committed to obtaining as much training and as many certifications as possible to ensure we are well-versed in how to cut and curate curly hair. While this investment has been timely and (very) costly, we feel that curly girls are done a disservice in most salon environments and it’s important to us that we provide a comfortable, trustworthy environment for curly clients to be able to enjoy their salon visit in. Despite our persistence and dedication to learning all things curly, no two heads of curly hair are the same and each client requires a unique approach. That’s why we keep pushing for MORE knowledge!
This week, our team spent one of their well-earned days off back in the salon with Ouidad so that we could practice, practice, practice our curl knowledge. Our educator, the lovely Barbara, tested us on our product knowledge and reinforced the techniques we use to get gorgeous curl results!

Everyone agrees that the best part of a salon hair service is the shampoo. That scalp massage, that tingly clean feeling – we all look forward to a good wash. But it’s the moment right after the shampoo that we know our clients dread – the DRYER! We know that sitting under the dryer isn’t the most fun and patience can be difficult, but sitting under the hooded dryer is crucial to getting the best results from your service, and we’ll explain why!
Sitting under the hooded dryer simulates air-drying by evenly circulating gentle air throughout your hair and scalp. This helps avoid the harsh heat application of blow-drying that can exacerbate existing damage or dryness. Typically, your stylist will want to have you sit under the dryer to get most of the moisture out of your ends and ensure your scalp is completely dry. Blow-drying is preferably saved for getting whatever the hooded dryer wasn’t able to dry out, ensuring every precaution is taken towards maintaining the health of your hair!
When you have curly hair or are getting a curly style like Rollersets or FlexiRods, sitting under the dryer helps to set your curls without adding frizz. The longer you are able to sit under the dryer, the better results you will experience! If you aren’t able to completely dry, which takes some time since we are using gentle heat, any moisture left in your locks will loosen your curls and promote frizz at the root.
The curl definition that this client experienced was due in-part to the ability of her hair to dry naturally and without interference under the hooded dryer. This client could anticipate a 30-45 minute dryer time with final touch-ups using low-heat and a diffuser
So what should you expect for your service? It all depends on your unique hair texture, thickness, and porosity! Some clients can dry completely in 20-minutes while other clients require an hour. For styling services that set under the dryer, we find that sitting under for at least one hour (usually up to two hours) makes a noticeable difference in the results you experience even days after your appointment.
How to make your dryer experience more enjoyable:
Bring a Book! Many of us have lists of books we would love to read, if only we could find the time! While under the dryer, use the downtime to catch up on the latest read
Got work to do? We are happy to give our clients WiFi access so that you can catch up on your to-do list, send an email to an old friend, or catch up on your Pinterest boards while you hang out
Pack your headphones and a tablet. Suddenly you’re so wrapped up in your most recent Netflix binge that you forgot you were even at the salon
Comfort is key, so let us know how we can make your dryer time more cozy. We are happy to brew you a cup of tea and offer some ear protectors if the heat is too harsh on your ears
This client has bomb curls as a result of FlexiRods that set under the dryer for about 2 hours. Services like Lacers, Rollersets, and FlexiRods require the longest time under a hooded dryer for results like this!
