The Box Dye Dilemma

Are you ready for a big hair change and call your stylist only to find out she is booked through the holidays? At the grocery store in the corner of your eye, you see, that oh so trustworthy box color? Seems like a quick fix to hold you over until you can head to the salon for that new look, right? Let us break down a few reasons we are telling to avoid that tempting fix and to hold out for the pros.

1.Box Dye damages the integrity of your hair shaft.

Professional color deposits large color molecules to the hair cuticle where the melanin lives. On the other hand, box color stains the proteins on the hair essentially changing the chemical makeup. As the color is washing out, you will see the hair become more visibly dull and damaged, because the protein has been damaged by the color.

2. Hair color should not be a one size fits all experience.

When you are in a salon, the color is formulated and mixed according to the client in the chair. From the specific colors and tones, down to the developer that is chosen based on the integrity of your hair, if you’re not getting customized color formulations, chances are there are some funky end results you can expect. Who wants green tinted blonde hair?

3. Color should not be a guessing game, predictability is key.

Your stylist will be able to go through a consultation to know the color that is already on your hair, as well as the chemical make up of your hair, to give realistic end results.  At home box color is completely unpredictable. The majority of people doing at home color are applying it to their hair every time, refilling the cuticle and continually breaking down the protein bonds.

The damage from at home box dye wont go away just because the color has faded. The damage done by using this method is definitely fixable. Save time, money and a head ache and come and see us for a consultation from the start.
